Why Follow Up Matters
We'd like to discuss the importance of 'nurturing' your clients.
Following up a week or two after completing a project isn’t just about getting more work - it’s about showing genuine interest in your client’s success, gathering valuable feedback, and keeping communication open.
Benefits of Following Up
Show you care – Clients appreciate when you check in about their project.
Get feedback – Honest insights help you improve and refine your craft.
Update your reels – Asking for a copy of the final production helps showcase your work.
Build relationships – Staying in touch increases the likelihood of future collaborations.
How to Follow Up Without Being Salesy
Let’s be honest—no one likes receiving a generic “please give me more work” email. Clients can see through insincere marketing tactics, so the key is to approach follow-ups with genuine interest in their project’s success.
Best Practices:
- Learn about their goals – During the initial briefing, take an interest in the project’s purpose and audience.
- Follow up naturally – If you’ve already engaged with their project, checking in won’t feel out of the blue.
- Be concise and friendly – Keep it casual and to the point.
- Avoid salesy language – Let your footer do the promoting.
Don’t ask them to “keep you in mind” – if they liked your work and your've an easygoing nature, they will!
Be Confident With Feedback
Some voiceover artists hesitate to ask for feedback, fearing it may lead to criticism or extra work.
The reality is:
Most feedback is positive – If there’s an issue, it’s better to know and fix it.
Clients often don’t request new takes without reason – they’ve already invested in your work.
Being open to changes makes you a valuable asset – If a minor retake saves a producer’s bacon, they’ll remember and appreciate your professionalism.
Have A Starting Point
Having a starting point is always a good way to beat procrastination and stay motivated - thus can make follow-ups less of a pain
Below is an example of a template you could create:
Subject: Quick Check-In
Hi Pete,
I hope you’re doing well and your eLearning modules were well received by your client :-)
It was great working with you, and I wanted to reach out to say, if there was any feedback or comments, then I'm all ears.
Always happy to hop into the booth and fix any issues.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
All the best,
Jay.
p.s. If I can be cheeky and ask for a copy of the final audio/video, that would mean a lot. I like to keep my demo reels up to date and having clips of real projects that I've enjoyed doing really helps. Of course, I completely understand if this isn’t feasible or if there are any limitations!

Final Thoughts
Not every client will respond, and that’s okay.
The goal is to make genuine connections that lead to future work.
By taking an interest in their success, you naturally position yourself as a go-to voiceover artist they’ll want to work with again.
